I've volunteered to be a listener at a few other places before this one. My worst call was actually with a different organization. This was probably my most rewarding conversation, though any conversation that leaves the person feeling better is a successful one in my mind. I eventually convinced this person to wake up someone in their house and I was with them until the ambulance got to their house. They just wanted someone to talk to until they slipped away and weren't planning on telling anyone. My most memorable conversation, however, was one where I was talking with someone who had overdosed on some prescription medication. I cannot remember my very first conversation, as I have actually been listening at several different sites and started over 3 years ago. If I had no prior experience, I might not have felt as comfortable. I think that the training for this particular site was more of a reminder for people who have already had experience with listening on what was expected and what the best ways to talk with people are. I have had previous experience with listening, as most of the listeners have, so I felt prepared before the training for it. A lot of people are nervous to talk, so I just assure them that I am there to listen to anything they have to say and that I will remain unbiased and won't judge them. I just try to be patient and I do things that help make them more comfortable. I haven't had many problems with people not wanting to talk, though. Asking them what's on their mind, what is going on, what brought them to the site, etc. My way of dealing with people who don't say much or are very vague in what they say is just to keep asking questions. This service allows users to connect to a listener via phone, but it also allows them to connect to a listener through an online chat. r/IAmA /r/ControversialIama /r/InternetAMA /r/ILiveIn /r/NSFWIAmA /r/shittyAMA /r/IAmAFiction /r/drunkenAMA accounts, no selling products or services.**) including links to personal patreon/kickstarter/etc.
